Small kidney stones may go undetected as they don’t cause many symptoms. However, large stones cause debilitating pain in the side and back which can spread to the lower abdomen and groin. Kidney stones common issue and 13 percent of the male population and 7 percent of the female population in the U.S get kidney stones in at some point. If left untreated and the person having them doesn’t make any change in their diet, they have a 50 percent chance of reoccurrence.

What are Kidney Stones?

There are many different types of kidney stones. Among them are:

1.      Calcium Stones

Most of the kidney stones are calcium stones in the form of calcium oxalate, a substance which is naturally found in food, such as some fruits, vegetables, nuts, and chocolate. Moreover, the liver produces oxalate as well. Factors that can increase concentration of oxalate in the urine include high doses of vitamin D, several metabolic disorders, dietary factors, and intestinal bypass surgery.

2.      Uric Acid Stones

People who are susceptible to a formation of uric acid stones include those who lose too much fluid, eat a high-protein diet, have gout, or don’t drink enough fluids. Moreover, the risk of uric acid stones can be a matter of genetics.

3.      Cystine Stones

These stones are a result of excretion of too much of certain amino acids and it is common for people with hereditary disorder.

4.      Struvite Stones

These stones are usually infection-induced, such as from UTI.

How to Prevent Kidney Stones in 6 Simple Steps

1.      Eat less salt

While unprocessed salt is acceptable, processed salt which is usually found in junk food is one of the most common causes of kidney stones.  Consume more fruits and vegetables and add more healthy foods into your diet.

2.      Drink less soda

Not only is soda bad your kidneys, it is bad for the entire body as well. It contains phosphorus acid which acidifies in the urine, leading to formation of kidney stones. According to a South African study, the consumption of soda aggravates conditions in the urine, promoting formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones.

3.      Drink less black tea

Given the fact that black tea contains oxalate, overconsumption of it may cause kidney stones. Therefore, keep your black tea intake to a minimum.

4.      Get enough citrus

Doctors often used citrate to treat kidney stones. Luckily, you can get citrate into your diet by consuming citrus fruits like oranges.  Another good way to get citrate is to drink lemon water.

5.      Drink more water

Sufficient water intake is crucial to preventing kidney stones and to maintaining good overall health. As a matter of fact, lack of hydration has been associated with the formation of kidney stones.

6.      Start a calcium-rich diet

The formation of kidney stones can be also a result of a diet low in calcium. Therefore, consume more calcium-rich foods and oxalate-rich foods to reduce the risk of getting kidney stones. According to the National Kidney Foundation, collard greens and kale are some of the best sources of calcium.
