31-Year-Old Invites Ailing 89-Year-Old Neighbor To Move In With Him

Chris Salvatore moved in across the hall from Norma Cook, who was then an 85-year-old woman back in 2013. In no time the pair became very good friends.

“She called me the grandson she never had,” Salvatore said of Cook. He further added that he considered her a grandmother, who he describes as very friendly but sassy with a hint of stubborn.

The pair became the very best of friends, in that when Cook’s health became really poor and she required constant care, Salvatore asked her to move in with him.

Cook’s health started deteriorating when she turned 89. Cook was battling leukemia and pneumonia and breathing problems.

After staying in the hospital for two months, Salvatore learnt that his favorite old lady wouldn’t be allowed to return home unless she had constant care.

Cook had no children or any family close-by. There was nobody to care for her when she needed help the most.

Determined to help, Salvatore set up a GoFundMe for Cook. After trying a few caretakers, Salvatore realized the only one he would be really comfortable leaving his friend with, was himself. So he invited Cook to move into his apartment.

“The only other option was for her to go into a facility,” “I just couldn’t do that to someone who is like my own grandmother. She couldn’t be happier that I asked, I was over there visiting most days anyway.” Salvatore told TODAY.

The two turned out to be excellent roommates. “We always watch the news. We mostly talk and drink Champagne and eat peanuts.” Cook told TODAY. “He cooks for me. If he can’t make it as an actor, he can make it as a chef.” she added jokingly.

Unfortunately, on February 15, 2017 Cook passed away. Salvatore shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, where he regularly shared the pair’s adventures.

“I’m so happy I was able to give her this gift of living her last days at home. I can’t imagine what it’s like to go through the end of your life at a hospital without your friends or pets.” Salvatore told GoFundMe.

Salvatore is the embodiment of a perfect, caring neighbor with a beautiful heart. We hope this story inspires you to spread a little love and kindness today!
