Eighty three year old Joan Holland may be bedridden at an assisted living facility in Cranford, New Jersey, but that has not been reason to stop her from showcasing her amazing skills when it comes to painting. According to ABC News, she’s been confined to bed rest for the past year, but since she discovered Paint for Numbers, a painting kit for adults, she hasn’t felt bored at all.
“You get tired of laying around in bed,” Joan told ABC News. “I tried knitting and was good for a while, and I tried reading. But the Paint by Numbers, the painting is perfect. It was easy to set up, easy to clean up, and didn’t make a big mess. And I had good results from it.”

Joan already has an impressive collection of her own finished paintings that she couldn’t be more proud of. Joan posed with her finished paintings in her hospital bed as her granddaughter, Jill Sobocinski, took a photo of her. Jill later tweeted the photo where it went viral.
Jill says her grandma is noticeably happier since she started painting. “Being stuck there, she does get cranky sometimes,” Jill said. “This is her outlet and her getaway. It brings her joy.”
“Being there and seeing her do this, it’s an inspiration to me and my family. She doesn’t look that happy all the time, but this brings it out in her,” added the proud granddaughter.
It usually takes Joan around 10 days to finish a painting, and when she does, she likes to give them away to nurses or family members. She said, “They’ve served my purpose, and now someone else can enjoy them.”
