Rock-star Steven Tyler is well known as the front-man to the rock-band Aerosmith. Just recently, Steven Tyler celebrated the opening of ‘Janie’s House’, a care home in Memphis, Tennessee, for abused girls and neglected girls.
The 70 year old Grammy award winning singer, who is popularly known to like tying scarves around his mic-stand, attended a ‘scarf-cutting’ ceremony for the care home. He said, “This does my heart and my soul good. This is real.”
The care home’s name was inspired by Aerosmith’s 1989 hit, “Janie’s Got a Gun,” written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton, about a young girl who is abused by her father.
Tyler revealed that he got to understand the trauma that young victims of abuse go through from those he met at a treatment center and decided he had to do something to help them.
“While I was there, all the girls I met had been abused either physically, mentally or verbally, or at least 90 percent of them all. So when I got out of there, I laid it all on Janie. I said, what are you going to do?” he said.
Tyler’s foundation, Janie’s Fund, which he launched in 2015, donated almost $500,000 to the new project.
According to the foundation’s website, Janie’s Fund was created to bring more awareness to the abuse and neglect of children and to generate financial support to ensure that girls receive the most effective services to help them overcome the trauma and pain of abuse.
The facility is operating out of the location of a nonprofit called ‘Youth Villages’ in Bartlett, Memphis. Youth Villages says it helps emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families live successfully.
The care home fosters 14 girls at a time, between 26 and 60 annually, and promises to shelter them for as long as they need help.
The only other Janie’s House opened in 2017 is in Dougslasville, Georgia.
Such a sweet and kind man, it really is awesome when people use what they have been blessed with to help those in need!
