A couple from northern California were taking their routine walks with their dog on their property one day when they spotted something unusual on the ground.
They stopped to check what it was and they discovered something that changed their lives for the greater good. They had walked this path for many years but never found anything. When the woman spotted a rusty old tin, she decided to take a look and she is glad she did.
The old rusty tin turned out to be filled with rare solid gold coins that dated back to California’s gold rush days in the 1800s. They later discovered seven more cans just like it.
In total, the cans contained more than 1400 gold coins dated between 1847 and 1894, all in surprisingly good condition and the total estimated value of this lucky find was $ 10 million.
Don Kagin, a veteran numismatist who represented the couple told CBS News that,
“…you don’t get an opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever. It’s like they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”
The couple who wanted to remain anonymous to protect their privacy, put the coins on market. The estimated value of a coin by itself was worth $1 million. Figures most could only dream of.
The couple then used some money to clear their bills and then decided to donate the rest quietly to benefit charities in their community.
Don Kagin quoted the woman advising other fortune hunters out there.
He said, “Don’t be above bending over to check on a rusty can.”
