Do you believe in soulmates? The existence of someone specially created to be your companion through life? Well, this story of a Texas couple that passed away while holding hands is about to melt your heart and restore your faith in the existence of true love!
According to Click2Houston, the couple, Tom and Delma Ledbetter’s, first met in their early 20s through mutual friends. For their first date, the two simply drove around a couple of blocks and went back home.
Donetta Nichols, one of the couple’s children, said, “They drove around two, three different blocks or whatever and they came back and they parked and he said he reached over and he grabbed her hand and he said, ‘I don’t know what made me do it.’ He said, ‘I just reached over and gave her a kiss on the cheek.’”
Just three weeks after their first date, Tom and Delma got married. Soon after they had two daughters, years later came their seven grandchildren and then their seven great grandchildren.
For 62 beautiful years, Tom and Delma were inseparable. Their love for each other was a certain constant all through their lives. After retirement, the couple were able to travel the world and enjoy each other’s company even more.
Sadly, Delma’s health began to deteriorate in April of 2017 and she was admitted to a nursing home. Just a few days later, Tom fell ill too and he was taken to the same nursing home as his wife.
“We got him over to the nursing home with Mama. They had pushed their little beds together and Mama was laying right there, facing him. She was asleep and Daddy goes and he reached over there and he grabbed ahold of her hand and he just laid there with her, and it was so sweet,” Donetta Nichols said.
The beautiful couple passed away, holding hands, just an hour and a half apart. “It was exactly how they wanted to go. It couldn’t have been any better.” Nichols explained.
Stephanie, the couple’s granddaughter, took a photo of Tom and Delma during their final hours together. That sweet photo rapidly spread across the internet and touched the hearts of millions across the world.
Tom and Delma were laid to rest side by side at Restwood Memorial Park in Clute, Texas.
If you asked me, this story is a great inspiration to believe in love. And while their departure was sad, it is also a reminder just how blessed they were to find a love so exceptional!
