A viral heartwarming photo captured the moment a Texas high school football player prayed with an opponent after learning that his mom is battling stage 4 cancer.
As soon as the final whistle blew at Sherman High School, Gage Smith asked his friend Ty Jordan, of West Mesquite High School, if he could pray with him for his mom, 42-year-old Tiffany Jordan, who is battling stage 4 lung and bone cancer.
The two footballers then got down on their knees with their heads bowed and offered a prayer up to heaven for Jordan’s mom in a solemn moment that was captured in a photo by the wife of Smith’s football coach who then shared the image with Jordan’s aunt, Takka, who then posted it on social media.
Takka revealed the kind gesture meant so much to their family. “I was sent these pics last night and was going to make a long post but I’m gonna keep it short. Be careful how you treat people because you just might be entertaining an angel!!
“#GageSmith thanks for praying and speaking LIFE into my nephew, Ty Jordan, you are blessed & amazing.” she wrote.
Jordan is a star running back who is committed to the University of Texas, while Smith is a senior safety and team captain. The two became friends when they played on the same select 7-on-7 flag football team in the spring and summer the past two years. Smith found out that Jordan’s mom had cancer from a group chat.
Speaking to Today, Gage Smith said, “It was meant for just me and him to have a moment and to pray over his family and for his mom. I just wanted to let him know there are other people thinking about him and his family, and let him know he has somebody to turn to.”
The picture quickly went viral garnering more than 140,000 shares online. Several social media users praised Smith for his act of ‘compassion’.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Jordan’s mom and has already raised more than from well-wishers.
Jordan’s mom, Tiffany, has had numerous medical procedures and hospital stays since her diagnosis and is currently receiving radiation, chemotherapy and taking several medications for pain.
“I was speechless. It made me cry. [Gage] didn’t have to do that. The fact that he took the time to pray with Ty for me, that took my breath away.” Tiffany told TODAY, after she saw the image
