Sara Heller was shaken after she received negative comments regarding the appearance of her son, Brody, who is just a few months old. Brody has a bilateral cleft lip and pallet as well as a rare form of chromosome deletion. Due to this condition Brody does not look like other babies but that does not affect the love his parents have for him.
During an ultrasound appointment it became clear that Brody would be born with bilateral cleft lip. The doctors asked Brody’s parents if they would like to keep the pregnancy. That was never a question to the happy couple expecting their first child.
“What’s wrong with your son’s face?” the comment read. Brody’s parents were shocked by the ignorance directed at an innocent baby.
Although the comment broke Sara’s heart, she remained calm and decided to educate people about her son’s condition.
“My job as his parent and his advocate is to tell his story,” she explains
A few days before the New Year, Heller with little Brody were having dinner with some friends. As the dinner progressed, Sara was approached by a waiter who held a pice of paper. A stranger at the next table had sent them a special gift, he said.
Thing that it was just a note, Heller was surpried when she discovered she was hloding a check of $1000. The memo line read, “For your beautiful baby.”
The money came at a greatly needed time as Brody was preparing to undergo a major surgery that would seek to repair his palate. The successful surgery was held earlier this month, and little Brody is improving greatly.
