At one point, we have all sent a text to a wrong person and I bet we all know too well the cringe that follows immediately after you hit send. For one grandma however, she managed to create a beautiful friendship and a thanksgiving tradition from a wrong text.
In 2016, Wanda Dench texted her family members to remind them of the Thanksgiving dinner times as is normal for the family. However, instead of her grandson, she wrongly texted a young man by the name Jamal Hinton.
The conversation was a little confusing at first for the two, but after sending pictures and realizing that the then 17 year old Jamal was definitely not Wanda’s grandson, Jamal went on to casually ask if he could still ‘grab a plate’.
In true spirit of the holiday, Wanda invited the teen over for Thanksgiving dinner. Since then Jamal has been having Thanksgiving dinner with Wanda and her family as Wanda’s ‘honorary grandson’, and that has already become a tradition.
“It was really nice having everybody here. We got to laugh about last year and reminisce about how it all blew up on our phone and how I had to change my number. We had a laugh and a good time.” Wanda told the Arizona Republic last year.
Every year after they first met, Jamal posts on his social media about spending the holiday with Wanda and her family and their kindness. This year he tweeted three pictures of himself and Wanda with the caption: “2016, 2017…2018.”

“I’d never seen her before and she welcomed me into her home. That shows me how great of a person she is, I’m thankful for people like that.” Jamal told ABC15 in 2016 after their first Thanksgiving together.
Their conversation which started the whole thing was shared on social media over 200,000 times and shows the kindness that can be found in people. The pair now text each other every week and have a lovely friendship.
“For him to continue with the relationship, I’m just really pleasantly surprised. We’re more of extended family and, best of all, friends.” Wanda said.
