A husband and wife from Austin, Texas with a combined age of 211 have been named the oldest married couple in the world by the Guinness World Records.
The announcement of their impressive title comes just a month before John, 106, and Charlotte Henderson, 105, are due to celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary on December 15.
John and Charlotte’s love story began way back in 1934 when the two met in class while attending the University of Texas. Charlotte was studying to become a teacher, while John was a guard for the football team.
They eventually married in December 1939 during the Great Depression and spent just $7 on their hotel room for their honeymoon.
So what’s the secret to the couple’s record-breaking marriage and long life?
“Living in moderation. We never overdo anything. Eat well. Sleep well. Don’t over-drink. Don’t overeat. And exercise regularly.” John told USA Today in 2017.
Aside from being one part of the oldest married couple in the world, John is also the oldest living former UT football player. For the past 84 years, he has made sure to attend at least one UT football game a season.
“We had such a good time when John retired. We traveled a lot. We just stay busy all the time, and I’m sure that helps.” Charlotte said.
Both of these lovebirds are still very healthy and John exercises every day.
10 years ago, the couple moved into the Longhorn Village, a senior living community for University of Texas staff and alumni, where they currently stay.
Congratulations to the beautiful couple, we pray you celebrate many more wedding anniversaries!
Remember to share this to congratulate this sweet couple on their record-breaking achievement.
