Thomas Harwell, a 39 year old firefighter, carried an elderly woman down the stairs to her seat at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and then back up the same stairs when it was time for them to leave. Now, a picture of his compassionate act, shared on Facebook by his wife Shayla Harwell, has gone viral online with people praising the selfless man’s kindness.
The couple from Hardin, Texas were awaiting the start of the concert when Shayla spotted an older woman, who was in the company of another adult and two children, struggling to make the way to her seat.
According to ABC Houston, the elderly woman had just suffered a stroke and was also fighting cancer. “She was shaking and having trouble getting her feet to move from step to step,” Shayla said. “I pointed them out to Thomas and said they may need help. He didn’t even hesitate!”
Thomas walked over to where the old woman was and asked their permission to help her out. He then picked her up in his arms and walked her down the steps to her seat just before the show started.
After the show, she didn’t have the energy to make it back up the steep flight of stairs. Again, Thomas did not hesitate to carry her up.
Shayla was so proud of her kind husband, that she took to Facebook to share what she had witnessed. In a now viral post she wrote,
“Y’all I have to brag on my husband big time tonight! He made me Soo proud. As we were sitting in our seats waiting for the rodeo to start I noticed an elderly lady ( pictured below) her grown daughter and 2 young granddaughters trying to come down the stairs. The elderly lady was having a rough time. I pointed them out to Thomas Harwell and said they may need help. Not only did he help get her to her seat, but she did not have the strength to come back up the stairs. So, he carried her!”
Shayla’s post has since been shared over 8000 times with people on the internet praising her husband’s act of kindness.
