Meet The Ethiopian Boy Whose Rare Blue Eyes Make Him Stand Out & Perfectly Unique

A young Ethiopian boy is capturing the attention of many people online because of the startling color of his eyes.

The boy named Abushe, from Jinka, southern Ethiopia, was born with stunning blue eyes which stand out even more prominently because of his dark skin.

Abushe was born with a condition known as Waardenburg syndrome, a melanin gene mutation affecting pigment in the development of eye color. The condition is so rare that is only effects an estimated 1 in 40,000 people, according to the United States National Library of Medicine.

At first, Abushe’s parents were shocked to see his unusual eyes and feared that he might be blind. However, they couldn’t get him diagnosed or treated as they were desperately poor and lacked the funds required.

Later on, Abushe’s parents came to the understanding that his condition was actually a gift from God.

Eric Lafforgue, a French photographer met Abushe in early 2016. At the time, the young boy was living with his grandparents in a small hut made of hatch and wood. Unfortunately, a fire broke out, and their home went up in flames.

Abushe and his grandmother escaped without any major injuries except for a burn that left a scar on Abushe’s forehead.

Abushe’s dream is to play soccer one day with famous soccer stars.

The fire destroyed the only few possessions the family had, but Abushe was able to save something extremely precious to him, a red soccer ball that became his world.

Abushe’s dream is to play soccer one day with famous soccer stars. His favorite team is Barcelona and looks up to football star Lionel Messi. “Messi is just like me. He is not like the others!” he told Lafforgue.

Sadly, other kids who don’t quite understand why Abushe is different often bully and harass him because of his eyes. They call him “plastic eyes” and “monster” and sometimes they go as far as physically hitting him.

Abushe does not let that get him down though. He is focused on being a great soccer player and finally be able to provide for his family one day.

In February of 2019, Lafforgue shared an image of Abushe on Instagram writing, “No one would pay any attention to Abushe, but if you catch a glimpse of his eyes, their incredible magnetic colour will stop you in your tracks.”

Abushe lives in Jinka, southern Ethiopia. No one would pay any attention to Abushe, but if you catch a glimpse of his eyes, their incredible magnetic colour will stop you in your tracks. One would ascribe it to the effects of great miscegenation, but Abushe actually suffers from the Waardenburg syndrome.
