Dancing with the Stars is a well known TV show that gained its popularity by bringing all kinds of celebrities to its stage and putting them in a pair of dancing shoes since its debut in 2005. One such celebrity competing in its now 24th season is Simone Biles, the amazing gymnast who rose to fame after an incredibly amazing performance in the 2016 Olympics as part of the U.S. Gymnastics team. Simone is a common name when it comes to the sports world, but it is something that she did on Dancing with the Stars that is making her the talk of all the internet all over again.
In the fourth week of the dance competition, Simone was challenged with dancing to a routine that followed the theme of what she considered her “Most Memorable Year.” Everyone assumed her “Most Memorable Year” would be 2016, the year when she won four gold medals and rose to be one of the most famous gymnasts in the world! However, what Simone chose to highlight instead was something unexpected and much more personal from the year 2000 when she was just three years old. This is the year when Simone was legally adopted by her grandparents.
She said, “Growing up, my biological mom was suffering from drug and alcohol abuse and she was in and out of jail. I never had mom to run to. I do remember always being hungry and afraid. At 3 years old, I was placed in foster care.” Her only source of hope and a little joy in her rather troubled childhood were the visits to the foster home from her grandfather, Ron Biles. She practically lived for those moments, and so did her grandfather. Eventually her grandfather and his second wife, Nellie, got to adopt Simone and her three siblings to give them all their love and a permanent home.
The adoption literally changed Simone’s life forever. She started calling her grandma and grandpa, Mom and Dad from then on. She was finally able to lead a normal childhood with a stable home. She said, “My parents saved me. They’ve set huge examples of how to treat other people, and they’ve been there to support me since day one. There’s nothing I could say to them to thank them enough.”
Simone confessed all this to her dancing partner with unstoppable tears in her eyes, an exceptionally emotional moment in the history of Dancing with the Stars. Before performing a Viennese Waltz to “Good Good Father” as a way to say thank you to her dad, she made this statement to the audience, “Even though there’s no right words, maybe a dance will say it for me.”
At such a tender age of 20, Simone Biles has overcome many challenges life has thrown her way. Watching her performance will show you a side to her you probably had no idea about. Simone’s story of overcoming every obstacle and challenge can be an inspiration to all of us.
