Homelessness is a major issue in most countries across the world. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, 23% of the homeless population are veterans, men who selflessly gave their lives in service for their countries. Sad as this may be, George Silvey is one of these homeless veterans. After serving in Vietnam, George came back home to unexplainable struggle and life on the streets.
Determined to survive and have a better life, George stood at a corner in the streets with a cardboard sign in his hands. His aim, to get people who were passing by to offer him some help.
George was not begging for change, food or even clothing, he was asking for a job and an opportunity to get him back on his feet so he could turn his life around.
He also had a stack of resumes with him for anyone that was looking for a hardworking employee. “I know that once I get my foot in the door, I can make a lot of money real fast,” he told CBS.
One day, a woman driving by the corner where George was positioned saw his cardboard sign. She decided to start a conversation with him, and by the time they were finishing their little chat she was thoroughly impressed by George’s ambition and determination to get a better life.
She went ahead to post his story on social media with a goal to help George find a job. “We’ll get you a job, I’ll make sure of it.” She told him.
Luckily, just a few hours later, George got a call that he had only been dreaming about. According to CBS Local, George surprised everyone when he showed up early to work for his very first shift, getting their before his manager.
His new boss, Summer Gonzalez, revealed that she was so pleasantly surprised by his attitude that it literally stopped her in her tracks. She said, “How many people are really asking to earn their money when you see them out on the street? And how can you say no to someone that actually wants to take the initiative to take care of himself.” “He put his shirt right on and he got right to work. He’s a great guy.” She added.
George hopes his story can inspire others who are in his situation. “ Never give up.. never give up hope, because it can happen and it will happen.”
