Shelby’s story proves the power of a mother’s love and sacrifices for her children.
It’s a fact that parents would bend over backward for their children. When a woman gives birth, her maternal instinct kicks in naturally. She would do anything possible to ensure her child’s safety.
21-year-old, Shelby Ann Carter together with her boyfriend lived in Wyoming with her mother. The young couple was starting to build their life. In January 2017, they welcomed their firstborn daughter.
On January 30th a tragedy struck. Shelby was with her baby girl when their house suddenly caught fire.
The fire spread so fast that their house was filled with smoke and there was nowhere to escape.
Firefighters arrived in time to put out the fire but they later made a horrifying discovery on the second floor.
Shelby was in the most dangerous situation but she managed to strap her baby Keana into the car seat.
She would later drop her baby from the second-floor window. She sacrificed her life for that of her daughter’s; even though she was in her final breath.
Her baby was rescued and taken to the hospital as soon as she was found. The doctors had concerns she might have been affected by the smoke but thanks to her mother’s clever thinking she was not affected.
According to Wyoming-Speer Fire Protection ED Foglesonger, “ It’s amazing she was able to pull her thoughts together to save her baby daughter… It is a miracle the way it ended up.”
Shelby’s death broke the heart of Wyoming residents, a town in the southwest of Chicago of 1,400 people.
After the ordeal, neighbors came together and donated nearly $40,000 in just a few weeks to help in rebuilding the house and support Shelby’s remaining family members.
