Little Peanut, a former shelter dog, has experienced a lot of difficult moments in her young life. When she was two years old, the abused mixed-breed puppy entered the Delta Animal Shelter in Escanaba, Michigan with broken bones and a belly full of carpet, according to CBS. Now, a year later, Peanut has a loving new family—and it seems she decided it was her turn to do some rescuing. “I think she still has some ‘sixth sense’ about her past life that she has carried with her,” said the dog’s owner, according to a post left on the shelter’s Facebook page on March 20. “Today, Peanut was responsible for saving the life of a 3-year-old little girl.”
According to her owner, on March 17, Peanut (formerly named Petunia) started going crazy at home. She ran up and down the stairs, barked, and yelped until the owner’s husband took her outdoors. Once outside in the 32-degree weather, she bolted towards an open field behind the house. The owner caught up to her, only to find Peanut at the edge of a ditch, where a naked little girl was curled up into a ball. The shocked man immediately lifted her out, wrapped her up in his sweatshirt, and called 911. “By the time ambulance and police arrived, the little girl could only say one thing—’doggie,'” wrote the owner.
The emergency responders took the girl to the hospital for tests while deputies tracked down her parents in a nearby home with “unsafe and unsanitary living conditions,” according to the Huffington Post. The rescued toddler, who was uninjured, has now been placed under the care of Child Protective Services, according to a statement written by Delta County Sheriff’s Office. While there’s been no explanation as to how the toddler ended up outdoors alone, police have said that the case is still under investigation.
But there’s no doubt that little Peanut is an absolute hero. “She is a part of our family now and thanks to wonderful people like you at the shelter, she is alive,” the owner wrote. “Without her, not only would she have been gone from this world, but the life of this little girl might have been taken as well.”
