In a new video that is wildly going viral, an impressively smart beluga whale returns a phone to a tourist after she dropped it in the water, leaving everyone stunned.
A couple of weeks ago, when a rare beluga whale fitted with a harness appeared off the coast of Norway, speculations were going round that the beluga whale was actually a spy trained by the Russian navy and had somehow escaped.
From that time, the beluga whale become a fixture around the town of Hammerfest located near Norway’s northernmost point.
The whale’s friendliness and fearlessness around humans, evidence that he was probably trained by people at some point. Resident Linn Saether revealed that the whale was so comfortable around people that when you call it, it comes to you.
The beluga whale lets people pet him and even allowed scientists close enough to him to remove the tight harness, which they discovered had a mount for a camera.
Keen on seeing this whale for themselves, a group of tourists headed out into the water to see if they could spot the whale. Ina Mansika was one of these tourists who were eager to see the whale.
While peering over the dock, Ina’s phone accidentally fell out of her pocket and into the water. She and her friends thought she had lost it forever, but then the whale dived into the dark waters. Moments later when he resurfaced, he was holding the phone gently in his mouth.
“We laid down on the dock to look at it and hopefully get the chance to pat it. I had forgotten to close my jacket pocket and my phone fell in the ocean. We assumed it would be gone forever, until the whale dove back down and came back a few moments later with my phone in its mouth!” Ina said.
Ina was absolutely amazed and delighted, writing on Instagram, “when animals are kinder than humans.”
Here is the amazing video clip of the beluga whale recovering her phone.
