The Iconic Angela Lansbury Turns 94 Today — Let’s Wish Her A Happy Birthday!

Angela Lansbury is undoubtedly an icon of stage and screen! Boasting a career that has blossomed over 75 years, the legendary actress has remained a favorite of audiences of all ages.

Lansbury may be best known for her role in the long-running TV mystery series, Murder, She Wrote, Sweeney Todd or by younger audiences for playing in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as Mrs. Potts.

Angela Lansbury was born October 16, 1925 in London. She was only 17 years old when she walked into her first movie set. Although she had no prior experience in the industry and was starring alongside Hollywood big-shots like Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, she handled herself impeccably and ended up carving out a space for herself.

Amazingly, Lansbury got her big break accidentally when co-scripted John Van Druten met her by chance and saw something in her. He suggested she come audition when they couldn’t find the perfect fit for a character during the pre-production phase of the film, Gaslight and was blown away by her performance.

Lansbury left such an amazing impression on the filmmakers with her impressive demeanor and acting skills that it earned her an MGM contract and her 1st Oscar nomination. Her 2nd nomination came soon after for her work in The Picture of Dorian Gray, establishing her place  in the industry.

However, its on the stage that Lansbury really shined. In the 60s, Lansbury turned to musical theater with a role in the hit musical Mame. The role earned her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Over the years she won 4 more Tony Awards making her one of the most acclaimed leading ladies of the stage in history.

Lansbury is best known for her role as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote. The detective series is one of the most successful and long-running television shows of all time with over 12 seasons.

Thanks to her role in the series, she received 12 nominations for Best Actress in a Drama Series, a record for that category

“She’s a character known worldwide. She speaks every language; she’s in every country. She seems to be a universal woman that the world really likes, accepts and recognizes me for. That, I would say, was my most far-reaching role in my theatrical life.” Lansbury told Parade of her role in the series.

As Lansbury celebrates her 94th birthday on October 16, her contributions to the industry and her impeccable grace still shine brighter than ever. In her incredible career spanning 75 years, Angela Lansbury has earned 7 Tony Award nominations, of which she won 5.
