While shopping at a grocery store, little Norah and her mom ran into an elderly man out to get some things for himself, little did they know what an amazing friendship there was going to be born on that random day! 86 year old, Dan Peterson, was a widower, having lost his wife in 2016. Having had to live all alone after his wife’s death, left Peterson very lonely and depressed. On the said day, he was having a particularly hard day when this tiny bubbly girl stopped him and asked for a hug!
Norah’s mom explained in a viral Facebook post how her baby girl changed this random stranger’s life completely from a little act of kindness. She wrote, “She was sitting in one of those carts that look like a car or truck or whatever when an older gentleman walked by. We’d passed several other elderly customers but she seemed magnetically drawn to this man. Her face lit up like the sun, she waved excitedly, and said “Hi old person! It’s my birfday today!”
This caught Peterson completely off guard, it took a few moments to sink in that the toddler was actually talking to him, before the sweet old man replied back. “Well hello little lady! And how old are you today?” he asked. The two chatted for a few moments, said their goodbyes and went on with shopping.
However, a few minutes later, Norah decided she wanted a picture with her new pal, so her mom tracked him down and told him that her toddler wanted to take a photo with him for her birthday. Norah’s mom recalled, “He looked confused and then stunned and then delighted. “A photo? With me?” he asked. “Yes suh! For my birfday!” Norah exclaimed.
So the new friends posed together and then they hugged each other like they were long lost friends. They then thanked Peterson for his time. Norah’s mom said, “He teared up and said “No, thank YOU. This has been the best day I’ve had in a long time. You’ve made me so happy, Ms. Norah.”
But that was just the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Its been more than two years now since little Norah changed Peterson’s life completely. The pair now meet up every week and keep in touch through regular phone calls when they can’t hang out.
Peterson revealed to Norah’s mom that before he met Norah, he hadn’t had one night of peaceful sleep in months. Depression and anxiety kept him up all night, but after meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. He said she simply healed him.
Recalling that day, Peterson said, “It was one of those days that I’m on my own little private pity party. And I’m feeling sorry for myself and doubting my beliefs and it obviously changed my opinion that day and lifted my spirits to heights that I hadn’t known for a long time.” He further added, “If I didn’t have anything else to do the rest of my life, I have her to love.”
