A College student, Kayla Filoon, was just sitting on the couch doing homework with her newly adopted shelter dog snuggled beside her when her aunt took this beautiful photo of the pair. Kayla who is a student at Temple University, in Philadelphia was out walking dogs at Philly’s municipal animal shelter when she first spotted Russ.
The pit-bull had recently come in as a stray. He was sitting calmly in his kennel, sick with kennel cough. He also had an eye infection and itchy skin, was underweight, and his tail was bleeding. The whole time, Russ was very still, and watching, “as if he knew I was going to be his mommy one day,” Kayla told TODAY in an email.
The following day, Kayla went back to the shelter to see Russ again. She took him out for a drive, and bought him some snacks from Chick-fil-A. He ate them, sitting in her lap, while the song “A Sky Full Of Stars” played on the radio. Kayla said, “I actually cried. I knew it was meant to be.” In no time, Kayla put in an adoption application. That was about two weeks ago, and Russ hasn’t left her side since.
The sweet photo, which Kayla’s aunt posted on Facebook, has racked up more than 53,000 shares. Not only is it adorable, but the image also expresses an important message about adoption. Most shelters are filled with animals looking for homes, and based on this touching photo, you can see that Russ easily transitioned into his new environment and family.
Russ gets a lot of medicated baths now to help his skin feel better and his kennel cough has cleared up. Now he sleeps in bed, and goes on trips, and walks around campus. And, of course, keeps as close to his human as he possibly can.
“I was worried that when I brought him home, his attitude might change, But he’s still the same relaxed, I’ll-lay-down-and-cuddle-with-you kind of dog. He’s probably one of the most grateful dogs I’ve ever seen.”
