The pain of losing our loved ones is extremely heartbreaking, although time makes thing bearable, having a physical reminder of them can be comforting and even healing.
That is why one woman’s idea is widely going viral. Mary MacInnes from the U.K is helping those who have lost a loved one by creating a teddy bear out of their favorite item of clothing. Mary says she hopes her Memory Bears will bring immense comfort to those in pain and grieving.
According to Metro, the memory bears are made from the favorite clothes of loved ones who have died. The items used to make the memory bears can also include jewellery or ashes and can be made with a special pocket at the back, where you can put letters or other mementos that are special to you.
Mary who has been making the special teddies for 6 years, further revealed that the process can be emotionally draining.
“Recently I had a 37-year-old man pleading with me to make his two daughters aged 10 & 12 bears before Christmas. He insisted on paying in full and gave me £10 extra asking me to post them to his girls.
“It turned out he has terminal cancer and won’t see Christmas. I cried the whole time I cut out, sewed and stuffed those two little bears.” Mary said.
Initially, Mary had goals of having a career in the bridal industry and studied fashion tech at a U.K. university. She made her first memory bear five years ago as a favor for a friend and was repeatedly asked to make more.
“I made my first memory bear five years ago as a favor for a friend and was constantly asked to make more, but turned them down because I wanted to concentrate on university and a career in bridal. I gave in to requests for bears and once I uploaded photos to my page it just exploded – so at the moment I’m fully committed to making them.”
Since she decided to change direction and focus on making more of these special bears, she hasn’t looked back. Even though it is quite overwhelming Mary sys it’s always worth it when she gets a great reaction from customers.
“I love seeing their faces take on character and I’m absolutely loving life. I really enjoy meeting my customers when they collect bears – 80% burst into tears.” She said.
“I think that’s because garments arrive as sad reminders of the past then it’s almost as if new life is breathed into them. They become something that’s much more acceptable to cuddle and talk to, and the feedback is they definitely can help the grieving process.” She added.
This is truly a beautiful way to keep your lost loved ones close. Remember to share if you also love this idea.
