WWE superstar Shawn Michaels is a Christian and he is not ashamed to let everyone know it. The wrestler known to many as the heartbreak kid, Mr.Wrestle-mania or the show-stopper was born as Michael Shawn Hickenbottom in July 22, 1965, in Chandler, Arizona.
Shawn Michaels was raised in a military family along with his four siblings in San Antonio, Texas. He says he knew he wanted to become a professional wrestler when he was only 12 years old.
After graduating high school, Shawn Michaels went to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. However, while there he realized that college life was not for him. It was then that he began pursuing a career in professional wrestling.
In his climb to professional wrestling in the WWE, Shawn Michaels became known as a troublemaker, which in turn resulted in him being fired from the WWE. He then turned to drugs.
“I was one of those good drug addicts, I suppose I hid it better.” Shawn reveals.
“Everything was going well professionally, but in my personal life, I was an angry young man and to this day I don’t know why. You know I was raised a good boy..Um you know I think a lot of it has to do with I started wrestling when I was 19 years old. And I don’t think I even knew who I was as a young man yet and then all of a sudden I go into this line of work to where I can pretend to be whatever I want and I just used that as an escape.” He further explained.
As his drug use accelerated, Shawn Michaels started Degeneration X, a group of young rebels that broke every rule in the WWE. Then in 1998, a severe back injury made forced Shawn into early retirement. Doctors said he would never wrestle again. Shawn immersed himself deeper into drinking, doing drugs and other immoral deeds.
In 1999, Shawn met Rebecca. She had a strong Christian background and became instrumental in helping Shawn get on the right path. Soon after they started dating, Rebecca and Shawn got married in 1999. A few weeks after their wedding Rebecca got pregnant. At that time Shawn was still heavy on medication, taking about 35 pills daily as he had bad knees, a bad back and a damaged shoulder.
After their baby, Cameron, was born in 2000, Shawn cut back a little on the pills but didn’t stop. One day, Shawn Michaels was holding his baby when the child said, “Daddy’s tired.” Shawn recalls, “It was in that moment that I realized he was beginning to notice how I was acting. It was the worst feeling I had ever had.”
Shawn says he made a decision to quit that lifestyle that same day. He started attending church with Rebecca.
Shawn says his life began to change right then. 2 years later, Shawn joined a Bible study and gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized. “It was like burdens were falling off me and chains were being loosened.” Shawn says.
After back surgery, Shawn came out of retirement in 2002 and wrestled for the last time in 2010. “When I returned to wrestling, I went back a changed man. I had adopted a new way of thinking.” Shawn reveals.
Before getting in the WWE ring, Shawn would kneel and pray out in the arena as a way of shining his light in the darkness. “All I wanted was for God to help me be a good witness on the platform He had brought me back to.” Shawn Michaels said.
