11-year-old girl dies saving cousin in Florida tubing accident
Young girl remembered for her courage and compassion after fatal crash on Star Lake
What started as a summer day of fun ended in loss, after 11-year-old Jordan Roe was killed while trying to save her 8-year-old cousin in a tubing accident on Star Lake in Florida.
It was supposed to be a joyful afternoon on the water. The Roe family had gathered at Star Lake, located on the border of Putnam and Alachua Counties, for a barbecue and tubing trip. Jordan, her 8-year-old cousin Laila, and 9-year-old Brylee were riding a tube pulled by a Sea-Doo jet ski when the watercraft struck a dock, launching the children into the water.
The crash left Laila critically injured and Brylee with minor bruises. Jordan did not survive.

Jordan, known by her family as a natural “protector,” was remembered for always putting others first. Her aunt told reporters that Jordan gave her life to shield Laila during the crash — a selfless act that may have saved her cousin’s life.
“Jordan sacrificed her life, and she saved her cousin’s life with her life,” her aunt said.
Laila, who has undergone multiple surgeries since the accident, remains hospitalized in the pediatric ICU. Her family says her survival is a direct result of Jordan’s actions.

Family torn between grief and hope
Kristine Robinson, mother of Laila and Brylee, was in Tampa caring for her newborn in a NICU when she received the devastating news. Now, she’s urging families to take water safety seriously and to cherish every moment with their children.
“I just ask everyone, hold your babies tight,” she said in a local news interview. “Please be careful.”
Jordan, who had dreams of becoming a veterinarian, was known for her gentle nature and big heart. She loved animals and was always eager to help others. Even in death, she continued to give, becoming an organ donor — a choice that brought hope to other families in need.

“Jordan died as she lived — protecting her family,” Robinson wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to help cover funeral costs. Another fundraiser is supporting Laila’s ongoing medical care.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the incident and has requested any videos or eyewitness reports from the public. Meanwhile, residents around Star Lake and beyond have come together to mourn and honor Jordan.
Steven Gabbard, a longtime local, expressed the community’s shock: “Oh my gosh. It’s unbelievable. Star Lake is usually so peaceful.”
Jordan’s story — one of courage, compassion, and love — has resonated with people across the country. Her memory lives on in the cousin she protected, the lives she helped through organ donation, and the many who have been moved by her bravery.
