18-year-old dies weeks after collapsing at high school graduation
A heartbreaking loss as a recent high school graduate passes away just weeks after collapsing during the ceremony.
The heartbreaking story of Sienna Stewart has touched the hearts of many. At just 18 years old, this brave high school senior fought a long battle with heart disease, only to collapse during her graduation ceremony.
Sienna had lived with cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition, since the age of four. She received a heart transplant ten years ago, which gave her the chance to live a relatively normal life. However, her health took a turn earlier this year, and the struggles became harder to bear.
On May 23, 2024, as she stood ready to graduate from Hiram High School, Sienna experienced one of the episodes her family had sadly grown accustomed to. Her mother, Saevon Chum, recalled rushing to the school to find paramedics already attending to her daughter.
“She had collapsed,” Saevon said, noting that this was the first time Sienna had lost consciousness during an episode. But even then, Sienna’s determination was clear. Despite regaining consciousness and her family’s concern, she insisted on finishing what she had started. “I just want to graduate, I want to walk,” she told her mother, refusing to let her illness keep her from achieving this important milestone.
Her graduation day was bittersweet. Sienna had already missed her prom due to being in the hospital, so graduating meant the world to her. Just weeks later, on June 12, Sienna passed away. Her mother, despite the unimaginable pain, expressed how proud she was of her daughter’s courage. “Till the end, I was proud,” Saevon said, knowing how hard Sienna fought to live her life.
Sienna had dreams of studying to become a sonogram technician and was looking forward to starting college in the fall. Her story is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
