Catherine Banks, a proud Marine Corps veteran, recently faced an unexpected and humiliating situation while boarding a Delta Air Lines flight from San Francisco International Airport on October 16. Her peaceful trip to visit her fellow Marine sister took a drastic turn when a flight attendant asked her to deplane, citing her shirt as “threatening.”

As Banks settled into her seat, she was startled by a male flight attendant calling out to her. Confused, she listened as the attendant insisted she needed to leave the plane. Unaware of what she had done wrong, she complied, only to find out that her T-shirt was the issue. The shirt in question read: “Do not give in to the war within. End veteran suicide.” The message was one of awareness, intended to shed light on a serious issue affecting veterans—suicide prevention.
Despite explaining her service in the Marine Corps for over two decades, along with 15 years of work with the Air Force, the flight attendant showed little empathy. He told her she could only reboard the plane if she changed her shirt immediately. With no other choice, Banks reluctantly changed her shirt on the jet bridge, feeling deeply humiliated and disrespected.
To make matters worse, when she reboarded, she was not allowed to return to her original extra legroom seat but was placed in the back of the plane. The delay in resolving the issue caused the flight to be delayed, and Banks ended up missing her connecting flight.
Though Delta Airlines has since reached out to resolve the matter, the emotional damage left Banks feeling stripped of her dignity. The airline’s policy allows them to remove passengers if their attire causes discomfort to others, but many are left wondering: how could a shirt promoting veteran suicide awareness be perceived as threatening?
