Mel Gibson claims LA wildfires were set on purpose to clear land
The actor shares his controversial theory, suggesting the fires were part of a planned effort to free up land for development.
After losing his Malibu home in the devastating Palisades fire, the Academy Award-winning actor suggested the blaze may have been intentionally started, drawing both support and criticism.
The recent Palisades fire in Los Angeles has left thousands of residents devastated, including Mel Gibson, who lost his $23.5 million Malibu home to the deadly blaze. But the actor’s controversial theory about the fire’s origins has sparked fierce debate online.
A devastating loss for Mel Gibson
The Palisades fire, which began on January 7, has burned over 40,660 acres, destroyed nearly 12,500 structures, and claimed at least 24 lives, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Among those deeply affected is actor Mel Gibson, who learned of the destruction of his Malibu home while recording an episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast on January 10.
In a later interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Gibson described the experience and reflected on the tragedy. “My son grabbed like three things and took off and those are okay, stuff like passports and a couple of papers…[but] it’s tragic, it makes you really sad,” Gibson told Fox News.
He also revealed that among the items he lost were priceless pieces of artwork, family photographs, and rare books dating back to the 1600s. Still, Gibson tried to find perspective amidst the devastation. “It’s a strange mixture of sadness and almost kind of an elation,” he said, adding that the house and possessions they lost in the blaze were just “things” that “may or may not be replaceable but they’re only things.”
Gibson’s theory about the fire’s origins
While grieving the loss of his home, the Braveheart star shared a theory about the possible causes of the wildfire during his conversation with Ingraham.
“I know they were messing with the water, letting reserves go for one reason or another. They’ve been doing that a while. California has a lot of problems that sort of baffle the mind as far as why they do things,” the actor shared of a possible hidden agenda.
Gibson went on to speculate that the fire may have been intentionally started. “I can make all kinds of horrible theories up in my head, conspiracy theories and everything. And that the wind conditions were right and that there are people ready and willing and able to start fires.”
The actor hinted at the possibility that the alleged fire starters were working on behalf of larger interests. “Is it on purpose, which is an insane thing to think. One begins to ponder whether or not there is a purpose in mind. What could it be? You know, what do they want? The state empty? I don’t know.”
He also compared the destruction of his property to historical events, saying, “It reminds me of the old cattle barons, clearing people off the land. I don’t know…it just seemed a little convenient that there was no water.”
Mixed reactions: Supporters hail him, critics lash out
Unsurprisingly, Gibson’s remarks have drawn polarized reactions on social media, with some praising him as brave for speaking his mind and others criticizing him for spreading unproven theories.
Supporters commended the actor for “telling the truth,” with one netizen writing, “He has the guts to tell the truth.” Another commented, “Fabulous words of TRUTH from Mel Gibson – AGAIN!!!”
Others praised him as one of the few celebrities willing to address controversial topics. “Mel is one of the very few courageous entertainers with morals, conscience, that speaks truths others dare not,” shared one supporter.
However, critics were quick to push back, calling his claims baseless and insensitive. “Absolutely crazy. This is not an appropriate time to spread conspiracy stories about such a horrible situation. Not even sure any time is really appropriate, people losing lives and homes, is a time for compassion, not a time for conspiracies,” shares one displeased cyber user.
Some questioned Gibson’s mental state, with one user commenting, “Crazy is what crazy does! Mel, you’ve needed help for a long time, go and get it.” Another simply wrote, “Dang. Homeboy is losing his marbles.”
No evidence to support conspiracy theories
While Gibson’s remarks have garnered significant attention, there is no evidence to support his theories about the fire being “commissioned” or intentionally started for political or financial reasons.
Experts have emphasized that the Palisades fire, like many others in California, was fueled by dry vegetation, strong winds, and years of drought conditions. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has attributed the fire’s intensity to these environmental factors.
A community in mourning and recovery
As Los Angeles begins the long process of recovering from the devastating wildfire, the focus remains on helping those who lost their homes and loved ones. Gibson has expressed gratitude for his family’s safety, despite the immense loss.
“My son grabbed like three things and took off and those are okay,” Gibson said, reflecting on what truly matters.
For the thousands of others affected by the blaze, the journey to rebuild will undoubtedly be a difficult one.
