Melania Trump shares emotional message in her native language

Former first lady delivers a heartfelt video, connecting with fans through her Slovenian roots

Melania Trump’s life story is one of determination, family, and cultural pride. From her humble beginnings in Slovenia to becoming First Lady of the United States for a second time, her journey is as inspiring as it is unique.

Born Melania Knauss on April 26, 1970, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, Melania grew up in the small town of Sevnica. Her father, Viktor, worked as a car mechanic, and her mother, Amalija, was a pattern-maker in a clothing factory. Amalija’s love for design influenced her daughters, with Melania fondly recalling how her mother made clothes for her and her older sister, Ines.

“My parents taught us the importance of education, hard work, and family,” Melania has said about her childhood.

Melania’s life took a pivotal turn at age 16 when a photographer, Stane Jerko, discovered her at a fashion show. Although she initially dreamed of becoming an architect, Melania pursued modeling, eventually leaving for New York City in 1996. At 26 years old, she was older than most aspiring models, but her gamble paid off, and her career flourished.

Meeting Donald Trump and embracing motherhood

In 1998, Melania met Donald Trump, and their relationship brought her into the spotlight. After marrying in 2005, Melania devoted much of her time to raising their son, Barron. Her parents, Viktor and Amalija, became a key part of their lives, splitting time between Slovenia and the U.S. to be close to their grandson.

Barron, now a teenager, shares a special bond with his Slovenian heritage. As a child, he spoke with a Slovenian accent, reflecting the time he spent with his grandparents. Melania often credited her mother with being a “second mother” to Barron, especially during her busy schedule as First Lady.

Embracing her heritage as First Lady

Despite living in the U.S. for decades, Melania has held onto her Slovenian roots. Her ability to speak her native language came into the spotlight recently when she comforted a wildfire victim in Los Angeles. A video shared on social media captured her speaking Slovenian to a woman, earning widespread praise for her empathetic gesture.

“When we speak to people in their native tongue, they feel heard, they feel listened to, they feel the love!” one social media user wrote.

Melania’s connection to her culture also influenced her time in the White House. Whether attending events or delivering speeches, she often credited her parents for their sacrifices and the values they instilled in her. During her 2020 Republican National Convention speech, she said:
“My parents worked very hard to ensure our family could live and prosper in America… It is because of you that I am standing here today.”

Heartbreak and resilience

Tragedy struck in January 2024 when Melania’s mother, Amalija, passed away at 78. The loss deeply impacted Melania and her family. She described her mother as a strong, devoted woman who had an irreplaceable bond with Barron.

“She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy,” Melania wrote on social media.

A second chapter as First Lady

As Melania steps into her role as First Lady for a second time, her involvement has noticeably increased. Her recent efforts, including comforting wildfire victims and promoting family values, have garnered praise. For many, Melania’s journey is a testament to perseverance, family devotion, and cultural pride.

But her time in the public eye hasn’t been without controversy. From her infamous “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” jacket incident to criticism of her less visible role during Donald Trump’s first term, Melania has faced challenges. Yet, she remains committed to supporting her family and representing the nation.

Melania Trump’s story is one of contrasts: a small-town girl who became a global icon, a devoted mother balancing public life, and a proud Slovenian who embraced life in America. As she continues her journey as First Lady, many are watching to see how she will leave her mark during this second term.
