Melania Trump opens up about Barron in heartfelt message
The former first lady shares rare personal insight about her son, touching hearts nationwide.
From the moment Barron Trump was born, Melania Trump made it her mission to shield him from public scrutiny. As the son of a billionaire-turned-president, Barron’s life could have been filled with constant media attention. However, Melania worked tirelessly to ensure he had as normal an upbringing as possible, even while living in the White House.
Unlike many children of U.S. presidents, Barron was rarely seen in public during Donald Trump’s presidency. When Trump won the 2016 election, Melania made the unusual decision to stay in New York with Barron until he finished school, delaying their move to Washington, D.C.
Once in the White House, Melania continued to protect Barron’s privacy. He became the first boy to live there since JFK Jr., attending St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Maryland.
“It is known for its diverse community and commitment to academic excellence,” Melania said shortly before relocating from New York to the White House. “The mission of St. Andrew’s is ‘to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service,’ all of which appealed to our family.”
Barron’s life at the White House—rare insights
Though largely shielded from the media, a few details of Barron’s White House life emerged. Before moving from New York, he was reportedly excited about inviting his classmates to visit. In May 2017, Barron brought about 80 school friends to Washington for a private tour of the White House, complete with a buffet lunch and a speech from his father.
“Barron has been asking some of his school friends to come visit him in the White House,” a report stated. “He has said to his parents, ‘I hope there are bedrooms for my friends to come visit.’”
“Kids at his school are already planning sleepovers,” a source told NY Daily News, referring to Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School.
A source also told Page Six: “Barron was really sweet. He was so excited to show his classmates around the White House.”
Melania’s fierce protection of Barron
Throughout Trump’s presidency, Melania remained firm in keeping Barron out of political debates. When media coverage of him became intrusive, the White House issued a rare statement in 2017, urging the press to respect his privacy.
“It is a longstanding tradition that the children of Presidents are afforded the opportunity to grow up outside of the political spotlight. The White House fully expects this tradition to continue. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter,” the statement read.
However, it wasn’t just the media Melania had to shield Barron from. In 2023, Donald Trump shared a meme online featuring a photoshopped image of Barron at a debate podium, jokingly suggesting he should debate President Joe Biden. Melania was reportedly furious.
A source told RadarOnline: “Melania has been incredibly protective of Barron and has told Donald she would not stand for him to be exploited by anyone, even his father! He made a promise to protect their son — and he broke it. There’s a good chance she won’t forgive him, and the next time we see them together may be in divorce court.”
Now 18, Barron has recently been seen more frequently alongside his father. During Donald Trump’s election night victory speech, Barron stood confidently on stage, acknowledging chants of his name.
When his father gave a victory speech at Capital One Arena in Washington, he thanked Barron for helping him win the election.
On Inauguration Day, Barron was praised for his interactions with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. One body language expert, Judi James, analyzed the moment for Daily Mail, saying Barron “very confidently” and “charmingly” bent to shake hands with Biden.
“And although Biden’s face seems to fall as though Barron has passed on some kind of sinister threat or message, the truth was less dramatic as Barron seemed to be leaning to greet Kamala and Biden’s face was registering the fact that he’d finished his greeting ritual with Trump’s son,” James said.
She also described Barron’s demeanor on stage:
“When he was introduced by his father, he stood like a rock star acknowledging the cheers and chants of his name and even cupped his ear to increase them. Which is probably why people might assume (wrongly I’d say) that he’s possibly making barbed comments on his way out here.”
James added that Barron appeared to take on a natural leadership role.
“He lets everyone know that he is becoming a force to be reckoned with in his own right and because of his height and the increase in his confidence signals, it gives him a rather princely air, presence-wise.”
Melania Trump says Barron will have a bedroom at the White House
With Barron now studying at NYU’s Stern Business School, Melania confirmed he will still have a space at the White House if he wants to visit.
“Obviously he’ll have a bedroom there, but he’s an adult, he’s in college now. I think he will come and visit, yes,” Melania told Fox News, adding that she’d love if he brought friends.
“Yeah, whatever he would like to do, yes. I feel that as children, we have them till they are 18, 19 years old. We teach them, we guide them, and then we give them the wings to fly. And I always respect Barron’s yes and no, and what he likes to do, where he would like to be.”
With his father making a political comeback, many wonder if Barron will eventually follow in his footsteps. Only time will tell if he chooses a future in politics—or continues to stay out of the spotlight.
