Prince Harry to blame for his own ‘US exile,’ expert says
Royal expert argues Harry's choices led to his distance from the UK and royal family.
Prince Harry is reportedly planning to buy a home in the UK as he misses his old life, but his return may be a solo one. Meghan Markle has expressed concerns about their children’s safety in Britain, citing a lack of official security.
It has been five years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals and moved to California with their children, Archie and Lilibet. While they have built a new life in the United States, sources close to Harry claim he is beginning to miss his past life in the UK. Reports suggest that the Duke of Sussex is considering purchasing a home in Britain, which would allow him to spend more time in his homeland.
However, Meghan is unlikely to join him. She has publicly stated that taking their children to the UK would be a security risk since the couple no longer receives royal protection. This concern stems from the fact that neither Harry nor Meghan are working royals, meaning they are not entitled to automatic police security while in the country.
Ongoing security battle
Harry has been in a legal dispute with the British government over his security arrangements. Following his decision to step back from royal duties, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) withdrew his automatic police protection. Harry offered to pay for his own security but was denied, as British police are not available for private hire.
In a statement read by his lawyer, Harry expressed his disappointment:
“It was with great sadness for both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020,” he said. “The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the US. That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil.”
Harry reportedly sought help from King Charles, asking him to use his influence to secure increased security for his family. However, a royal insider told The Daily Beast that it would be “wholly inappropriate” for the King to intervene in a government decision. This has deepened the rift between father and son, further complicating their already strained relationship.
Impact on family ties
Because of these security concerns, Harry and Meghan have largely avoided returning to the UK as a family. This means their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have had little to no interaction with their grandfather, King Charles, their uncle, Prince William, or their cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Some royal experts argue that Harry has isolated himself from his family. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News:
“Harry is in exile – he chose it. It’s lonely, and he will undoubtedly miss his friends and family. There is no sign whatsoever of the rift in the Royal Family healing. King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales have, to put it mildly, other priorities.”
Fitzwilliams also suggested that Harry regrets not being able to negotiate a “half-in, half-out” arrangement that would have allowed him to retain some of his royal duties, particularly his military ties, which were important to him.
A damaged relationship
British broadcaster Helena Chard believes that Harry has burned too many bridges with his family, especially after releasing his explosive memoir, Spare.
“A self-assured, self-titled, angry Prince Harry thought it was completely OK to publicly verbally annihilate his family,” Chard said. “It is said he was naïve and didn’t realize it would upset his family. . . . He didn’t realize that his actions would cause such a fallout with his family and the public.”
Chard also claimed that Harry has become more isolated in the US, distancing himself from old friends and struggling to form new relationships.
“He is socially awkward when it comes to developing new and meaningful relationships. He was heavily sheltered growing up and developed his best friendships in school. But those people are hundreds of miles away, in different time zones, and focused on their own young families.”
What’s next for Harry?
Despite his reported plans to buy a home in the UK, Harry’s relationship with the royal family remains tense. His bond with his brother, Prince William, is still fractured, and there are no signs of reconciliation anytime soon.
While it’s clear that Harry misses parts of his old life, the challenges of returning—both in terms of security and family dynamics—make the situation complex. If he does move forward with a UK home, it may mark a step toward re-establishing ties, or it could further highlight the deep divide between him and the monarchy.
