Tragic death of 14-year-old boy after injecting butterfly in viral online challenge
Teen’s desperate attempt for online fame ends in a painful seven-day struggle
A 14-year-old boy from Brazil, Davi Nunes Moreira, died after injecting himself with a mixture containing crushed butterfly wings—a tragic consequence of a viral internet challenge.
The rise of dangerous online challenges has led to a growing number of injuries and deaths among young people. Many of these dares, often driven by social media, push teens to take extreme risks in pursuit of online recognition. Unfortunately, Davi became one of the latest victims of this disturbing trend.
Davi, from Planalto, Brazil, initially told his father that he had injured himself while playing. However, after experiencing severe pain, vomiting, and difficulty walking, his condition worsened. When his father discovered a syringe hidden under his pillow, the truth emerged—Davi had injected himself with a homemade concoction containing crushed butterfly wings and water.

A week-long battle for survival
Despite receiving medical attention, Davi’s health rapidly declined. He suffered for seven agonizing days before passing away in February.
Dr. Luiz Fernando D. Relvas, a specialist at the hospital where Davi was treated, explained that the boy’s death could have been caused by multiple factors, including an embolism, a severe allergic reaction, or a deadly infection.
“We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body,” Relvas said. He also warned that if air was present in the syringe, it could have caused a fatal embolism.
Authorities are investigating whether toxins from the butterfly may have triggered organ failure or septic shock. Professor Marcelo Duarte, a butterfly expert from the Zoology Museum at São Paulo University, noted that the chemical composition of butterfly fluids is not well studied, raising concerns about their potential toxicity.

The dangers of viral dares
Davi’s tragic story is not an isolated case. In April 2023, Brazilian influencer Thammy MC nearly lost her toes after participating in another dangerous online challenge. She stood in a bucket filled with ice and salt, a stunt that caused severe tissue damage and left her unable to walk.
Social media has played a significant role in spreading these risky trends, encouraging young people to take part in reckless challenges without understanding the potential dangers.
A call for awareness and responsibility
As online challenges continue to pose serious risks, experts and parents alike stress the importance of education and supervision. Young people need to be made aware of the life-threatening consequences of these viral dares before another tragedy occurs.
Davi’s heartbreaking death serves as a stark reminder that internet fame is never worth the cost of a life.
