11-Year-Old Boy Saves Drowning Man After Everyone Else at the Pool Froze

An 11-year-old boy is being called a hero in Lexington, Kentucky, after he spotted a man unconscious at the bottom of an apartment complex pool and swam down to pull him out when no one else moved, according to WKYT.

The rescue happened around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at a pool on Lakeshore Drive. Avory Woolery said he noticed something was wrong and looked underwater with his goggles on.

“There was this man in the pool, like unconscious underwater, almost shaking, maybe, and my adrenaline kicked in,” Avory said.

Seconds mattered, and nobody around the pool was stepping in.

“No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater,” he said. “I grabbed him up and I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He’s a human being. He should be treated as such.”

The man was in seven feet of water. Avory pulled him to the surface and got him onto the pool deck, where a friend started CPR while someone called 911.

The Lexington Fire Department said the man was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Avory’s father, Sean Woolery, was nearby when it happened and has been open about how proud he is.

“I’m proud of him. Somebody, when I was walking up here, somebody said, ‘Thank you, you taught him how to swim,'” Sean said.

A Reminder That Drowning Doesn’t Look Like the Movies

Water safety advocates in Lexington used the incident as a teaching moment. Caitlin Ellis, risk management director at the North Lexington YMCA, said drowning often happens without the warning signs people expect.

“Sometimes you may not even notice because, once they slip underwater, they’re fatigued, they’re not able to move, they may not even make splashes,” Ellis said, according to Fox 56.

Lexington Parks and Recreation staff echoed that warning, urging parents and caregivers to keep young swimmers within arm’s reach rather than relying on visible signs of distress.

Reports differ slightly on Avory’s exact age at the time of the rescue, most outlets report he was 11, while one report notes the incident happened just days before his 12th birthday.

Either way, Avory says he hopes to become a lifeguard or first responder one day. For now, he’s simply glad he didn’t hesitate.
