Michigan Parents Charged With Murder After Son, 7, Dies Weighing 255 Pounds
A Flint Township, Michigan couple is facing second-degree murder, torture and multiple child abuse charges after their 7-year-old son died last November weighing 255 pounds. Casper O’Brien died at a local hospital on November 4, 2025, hours after his mother called 911 to say he wasn’t breathing. Prosecutors say the boy suffered prolonged, deliberate neglect. His parents, Damien and Jessica O’Brien, remain jailed without bond.
Casper was 4 feet, 2 inches tall. The Genesee County Medical Examiner’s report lists his cause of death as dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition, with his weight listed as a contributing factor. For a boy his height, the CDC’s healthy weight range runs from about 50 to 73 pounds. He weighed more than three times that.
What officers found inside the house
When police responded to the 911 call, an officer reported extreme hoarding and, in his words, deplorable living conditions, including no working toilet and filth in the family’s living space. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton didn’t soften it either. He called the conditions inside the home deplorable, and said the case involved abuse, neglect, and torture. ABC News
Casper had never been enrolled in school. According to court filings, he’d seen a doctor exactly once in his life. And this wasn’t a family without options: Damien O’Brien had a steady job, and the family carried health insurance. Investigators say the parents simply didn’t take Casper for treatment despite having the coverage to do so. The same morning he died, the O’Briens called a veterinarian to have their dog looked at. A second child in the house
One of the abuse charges against the couple is tied to Casper’s 5-year-old sister. When officers arrived that morning, they found her in poor condition too, and she’s since been placed in foster care. She hasn’t been publicly named, and this piece isn’t identifying her either.
Where the case stands now
This is where the story moves past what most outlets have reported. At a July 2 probable cause hearing, a Genesee County judge ordered both parents to undergo competency and criminal responsibility evaluations, and denied their attorneys’ request for bond. A review hearing is now scheduled for September 9. No trial date has been set, and the case is still in its early stages legally, whatever the details already on record.
Damien O’Brien’s attorney, Elias Fanous, has said his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and that he’ll make his case in the courtroom, not the press. Neither parent has entered a plea publicly at this point.
Casper’s obituary, posted by Sharp Funeral Home, described him as a bright, loving boy with a joyful spirit, one who loved the kids’ show Super Monsters. He was preceded in death by a younger brother, Phoenix.

Casper was never enrolled in school and had almost no contact with a doctor, which meant no one outside the home was checking on him. Cases like this are part of why some child welfare advocates push for more oversight of kids who fall outside school and medical systems entirely.
