John Goodman’s Weight Loss: How the Roseanne Star Lost 200 Pounds and Kept It Off
John Goodman Spent Years Losing the Same 60 Pounds. Here’s What Finally Made It Stick.
John Goodman used to lose weight the same way every time. Sixty or seventy pounds off over a few hard months, then a six-pack of beer as a reward, then right back to where he started.
That cycle ran for years. Then, in 2007, something shifted, and it did not come back.
Goodman, now 74, has lost close to 200 pounds since then, down from a heaviest weight of about 392 pounds, according to reporting later confirmed by NBC News. The actor, known for The Big Lebowski, Roseanne, and voicing Sulley in Monsters, Inc., has kept most of that weight off for nearly two decades, a stretch far longer than any of his earlier attempts.
A Different Kind of Change
Goodman first talked about the shift publicly in a 2016 interview with ABC News, around the release of 10 Cloverfield Lane. He described the pattern that had defined his relationship with food for years.
“I’d have a handful of food and it’d go to my mouth,” he said. “I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically.”
He compared it directly to his history with drinking. In the old days, he said, he would take three months, drop 60 or 70 pounds, then reward himself with a six-pack and slide back into old habits.
This time was different. He slowed down. He started moving. He gave up the short bursts of restriction that never lasted.
“I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore,” he said. “And it gives me the energy to work, ’cause work is very draining.”
What Actually Drove the Decision
Goodman has said the turning point wasn’t vanity. It was exhaustion with his own reflection.
“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself,” he said. “You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”
He gave up alcohol around the same period, a decision he has separately described as tied to decades of struggle rather than a single moment.
Over time, he added a Mediterranean-style diet, cut back on sugar, and built a walking routine, later adding boxing workouts for stretches of the journey. The weight came off slowly. He had shed roughly 100 pounds by 2010, and continued losing gradually over the following decade rather than all at once.
