Prince George’s First Eton Portraits Have Royal Fans Looking Twice at One Very Familiar Face
Prince George’s first official portraits from Eton College have given royal watchers a familiar sight: the 13-year-old wearing the same distinctive school uniform his father, Prince William, wore when he attended the school more than three decades ago.
George began at Eton on September 8, 2026, arriving with William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. He had turned 13 in July, having been born on July 22, 2013.
He initially arrived in a suit and tie for his first day, but photographs released afterward showed him in Eton’s traditional uniform: a black tailcoat, waistcoat, pin-striped trousers and white collar. The portraits were taken by Matt Porteous, a photographer who regularly works with the Wales family.
The location of the portraits made the comparison with William even more striking. George was photographed beside the columns of Eton’s historic Lower School and walking through the Fourth Form Passage, the same locations where William posed for portraits around his 18th birthday.
There is a small difference between the two sets of photographs. William was already a senior student at Eton when those portraits were taken and had become a “Pop,” a leadership position that allowed him to wear a more distinctive waistcoat. George, by contrast, is only just beginning his time at the school and appears in the standard uniform worn by new pupils.
The connection between father and son goes beyond the photographs. William started at Eton in September 1995, when he was also 13, and remained there until 2000. George is now following the same educational path, more than 30 years after his father first arrived at the school.
His uncle, Prince Harry, also attended Eton, starting in 1998. In his memoir Spare, Harry recalled struggling with the school’s elaborate uniform on his first morning, describing how difficult it was to work out how everything fitted together.
For George, Eton follows four years at Lambrook School in Berkshire, where he attended alongside Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The move means the three siblings are now at different schools, with Charlotte and Louis continuing at Lambrook.

Eton is also close to the family’s home in Windsor, allowing George to board at the school while remaining relatively close to his parents and siblings. He joined around 250 other new pupils beginning their first year at the historic school.
George is second in line to the British throne, behind his father. The official line of succession places Princess Charlotte third and Prince Louis fourth.
For now, though, the photographs capture something much more ordinary than the future responsibilities attached to George’s position. A 13-year-old has arrived at the same school his father attended, wearing the same unusual uniform and standing in some of the same places.
Put the photographs side by side, and the resemblance is hard to miss.
