The 50-year-old death row inmate was scheduled to be executed on September 30, but the attempt was halted after officials administered two doses of the lethal injection drugs without successfully completing the execution.

Pike was subsequently taken to an unspecified Nashville hospital, where medical staff carried out life-saving measures. She remained unconscious for several days before eventually waking up.

What is execution status of Christ Pike?

At a court hearing on Tuesday, October 7, Assistant Tennessee Attorney General John W. Ayers confirmed that there is currently no new execution order for Pike.

Judge I’Ashea Myles pressed Ayers on whether the state intended to revive Pike’s execution order and whether the suspension of executions would be permanent.

“So is the state’s position that the state is not going to revive an order. I understand that all executions have been suspended for now. Is that going to be permanent, or is the state prepared to take the position that Miss Pike will not be rescheduled?” Myles asked.

Ayers said he was not in a position to answer whether Pike would ultimately be rescheduled for execution.

The judge then sought clarification on whether the state could guarantee that a new execution order would not be issued imminently.

“But you’re also not in a position to say that tomorrow a new execution order will not be presented. Is that correct?” Myles asked.

According to CNN, Ayers responded, “There is no pending execution order for Miss Pike. There is no allegation that one is coming.”

When was Christa Pike sentenced to death?

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of 19-year-old Coleen Slemmer, whom she believed was attempting to take her boyfriend.

After spending nearly three decades on death row, Pike had been scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in about 200 years.

Instead, the failed execution placed her at the center of an unprecedented situation.

Pike became the first person known to have survived two doses of Tennessee’s lethal injection drugs. Witnesses in the execution chamber reported hearing what they described as “loud snoring” during the attempt.

The execution was eventually halted, and Pike was transported to a Nashville hospital, where medical staff worked to save her life and remove pentobarbital from her system.

Her attorneys revealed on October 6 that Pike had regained consciousness and was speaking despite the severity of her condition.

In an emailed statement shared with The Tennessean, attorneys Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason said, “Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care.

“Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”

Pike’s lawyers also expressed gratitude to the first responders who treated her following the failed execution, saying they had “treated Christa like a human” and provided “exceptional care” during her recovery.
