Mom goes bald while battling brain tumor — Her son grows out his hair for 2 years to make a wig for her
A mother who has battled a brain tumor for almost 20 years got the most thoughtful gift a son could ever give a mother, and it’s just too cute to handle.
Matt Shaha from Arizona spent nearly three years growing out his hair so he could give it to his mother, who lost her hair due to radiation treatment.
“It’s a no-brainer,” Matt Shaha said. “She gave me the hair in the first place.”
For many years, Melanie Shaha has battled a recurrent benign brain tumor. In 2003 and 2006, she underwent two successful surgeries to have it removed, but in 2017 when it returned, radiation treatment was advised.
“I asked (my doctor), ‘Will I lose my hair?’ and they said ‘No.’” Three months later Melanie lost her hair.
“Not having hair, you stick out like a sore thumb and well-meaning people can say things that break your heart,” Melanie told Today. “I don’t mind being sick but I mind looking sick. I’d rather blend in and not stand out at the store.”
Shortly after Melanie started losing her hair, her 27-year-old son made a joke about growing out his hair and making a wig for her. Although it was a thoughtful idea, Melanie didn’t want to burden her son with that responsibility.
But her son didn’t see it as a burden. So he spent the following two and a half years growing out his hair. When it was the right length, Matt and his coworkers went to his mother’s house and had his hair cut. “We were super pumped and when they started cutting, we bawled,” Melanie said.
The 27-year-old went ahead and paid $2,000 for the wig to be made. The duo found a wigmaker who hand-stitched the hair, creating a wig that was lighter and more comfortable. Melanie had the wig cut and styled after receiving it. “Seeing her in it, it’s the first time I had seen my mom look like that since she lost it, so it’s been about four years,” Matt said.
Melanie was gushed over her new look. She couldn’t help but smile while thanking her son for the thoughtful gift.
The bond between Melanie and Matt is truly strong. We hope they keep on wearing that smile in the days to come. Let us know what you think about this story in the comment section.
