Quick-thinking waitress notices something strange and takes action—possibly saving a life

Everyday heroes are among us, and they remind us that we too can make a difference. The simple act of speaking up or asking a question can be enough to change the course of events. The waitress in this story is a shining example of how taking action, even when it’s difficult, can make a real impact. Let’s all be inspired by her bravery and courage.

A kind waitress named Flaviane Carvalho was working at a restaurant in Orlando, Florida on New Year’s Day. She noticed an 11-year-old boy who had some bruises and looked sad. Flaviane wrote a message on a piece of paper and asked the boy if he needed help. The boy nodded yes, and Flaviane called the police right away.

Flaviane said, “I was used like a tool from God to help him. We need to pay attention for the ones that are in need, and step forward to do something to change the situation.” She noticed that the boy’s family was not letting him order food or eat much, which made her worried. That’s why she wrote the message and saved the boy from a bad situation.

After officials stepped in, the boy was taken to a hospital where doctors discovered he had bruises all over his body and was extremely malnourished. Further investigation revealed that the child’s step-father, Timothy Lee Wilson, would regularly withhold food and water from him for multiple days. The boy had also endured various forms of abuse including being isolated, forced to do intense exercises, hung upside down, and even handcuffed to a cart on Christmas Day.

As per a report released by officials, “Officers recovered multiple items used as weapons—a bent metal pole, a wooden broom, a dolly cart, handcuffs, and ratchet straps used to tie the victim up.”

Wilson has been found guilty by a jury for false imprisonment of a child under 13 years old, three counts of aggravated child abuse with a weapon, four counts of aggravated child abuse, and one count of child neglect, according to State Attorney Monique H. Worrell. As a result of the verdict, he was sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars, with two life sentences.

Kristen Swann, the boy’s mother, was also arrested and charged with two counts of child neglect when police officials discovered that she knew about the abuse but did not seek medical attention for her son.

Carvalho, a witness in the trial, expressed relief that the abuser is being held accountable for his crimes and that the boy now has a better chance at life. She has developed a close relationship with the young boy and continues to keep in contact with him.

Carvalho’s prompt action and intervention have been praised by the authorities. According to Orlando Police Chief Rolon, if she hadn’t acted when she did, the incident could have turned into a possible homicide investigation. Therefore, she is truly a hero.

As a result of the child abuse case that ensued, Assistant State Attorney Lauryn Day was assigned to the case. Day told the media that if Carvalho had not spoken up, law enforcement and the child protection team believed that the child might have died.
