Andrew Lloyd Webber was ‘shattered’ by the death of his son Nicholas from gastric cancer

Andrew Lloyd Webber recently revealed that his oldest son, Nicholas Lloyd Webber, has passed away at the age of 43. This announcement followed shortly after the news that the composer would not attend the Broadway debut of Bad Cinderella.

Nicholas, a composer like his father, lost his life after fighting gastric cancer for a year and a half. He passed away in Basingstoke hospital, located in Hampshire, England.

Andrew expressed his deep grief on Twitter, sharing that his son had passed away at the hospital just hours prior. He also mentioned that the entire family had come together during this difficult time, and they were all heartbroken.

“I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital,” Andrew wrote on Twitter. “His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft.”

Nicholas, born in July 1979 to parents Andrew and Sarah Hugill, chose to follow his father’s career path despite initial hesitation. In his early years, he dropped his last name, Lloyd, to gauge people’s reactions.

In a 2011 interview with The Telegraph, Nicholas shared that he eventually realized his potential as a composer and producer. He decided to embrace his surname and move forward in his career.

Nicholas achieved success in various projects, including scoring BBC One’s “Love, Lies and Records” and a stage adaptation of “The Little Prince.” Moreover, he collaborated with his father on “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella.”

Their joint effort on “Cinderella” brought Nicholas and his father a Grammy nomination in 2022, further solidifying his place in the world of composing and producing.

The news of Nicholas’ passing came just days after his father, Andrew, informed fans that his son had been moved to a hospice. Nicholas had been struggling with a bout of pneumonia resulting from his cancer, but his father believed he was overcoming the worst of it. The family came together at the hospice, supporting one another during this difficult time.

Andrew, a renowned Broadway star, expressed his sadness at missing the opening night of Bad Cinderella, explaining that his priority was to be with his family in England. He prioritized being present for his son and supporting his loved ones during this trying period.

As the family grapples with their loss, many people are sending their thoughts and prayers to them. Although words cannot bring Nicholas back, the outpouring of support from others may provide some comfort to the grieving family.

In this challenging time, heartfelt condolences are extended to Nicholas’ family. We hope that the kindness and support from the community can offer solace as they come to terms with their tragic loss.
