Police in Wichita say the 47-year-old former St. Louis news anchor faces a first-degree murder charge following her mother’s death.

Authorities in Wichita, Kansas have confirmed the arrest of Angelynn Mock, a 47-year-old former television anchor, in connection with the fatal stabbing of her mother, Anita Avers, aged 80. Police responded to a call around 8 a.m. on Friday, where they found Avers critically injured inside her daughter’s home. According to KAKE News, officers located Mock outside the property, and Avers was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Wichita Police Department said Mock has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody at the Sedgwick County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Mock, who worked as a news anchor for Fox 2 in St. Louis between 2011 and 2015, was reportedly found with blood on her clothing when officers arrived. As reported by the Daily Mail, neighbors said the former journalist appeared “shaken” and was seeking help before she fled the scene briefly.

Neighbor Alyssa Castro told local reporters she was driving by when she saw a woman covered in blood approaching her vehicle. “She asked to call 911,” Castro said, adding that Mock seemed “scared” and “shaken up.” Castro’s boyfriend allowed Mock to use his phone, but she reportedly ran off with it moments later.

Police later located and detained Mock, who was treated for an unspecified injury before being booked into jail. The department has not released details on what led to the stabbing or whether any prior domestic incidents had been reported.

According to Wichita Police statements cited by KAKE, officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Avers’ death, including the events that unfolded inside the home before police arrived.

Family Tributes and Background

Anita Avers’ husband told KAKE that his wife had worked as a marriage and family therapist at Wichita Counseling Professionals, where she was known for her calm presence and dedication to clients. Friends and neighbors described Avers as a kind and engaged member of the community.

Social media images, shared publicly, show a warm relationship between mother and daughter in earlier years. In one photo, Avers’ Facebook profile displays a smiling Mock during her time reporting from a baseball field; in another, the pair are seen hugging.

Residents in the quiet Wichita neighborhood have expressed shock over the incident. One neighbor told reporters they had “never heard any trouble from that house before.” The police presence on the street Friday morning drew attention from several nearby homes as investigators worked through the day.

Police have not released further details about the investigation, and no court date has yet been set for Mock’s first appearance. Authorities say the case remains open as detectives gather forensic evidence and interview witnesses.

Family members have requested privacy as they grieve the loss of Anita Avers, remembered by colleagues as a compassionate professional and devoted mother.
