Bindi Irwin shares emotional update after emergency surgery uncovers new health battle

Conservationist thanks doctors after a surprise medical emergency revealed deeper complications from endometriosis

Bindi Irwin is on the road to recovery after emergency surgery revealed more health issues than expected — including a burst appendix, 14 endometriosis lesions, and a hernia.

Bindi Irwin, the 26-year-old daughter of the late Steve Irwin, faced a major health scare shortly after arriving in the U.S. for the Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas. Hours before the event, Bindi was rushed to the hospital with a ruptured appendix and had to undergo emergency surgery.

What was expected to be a single procedure quickly became more serious. During the surgery, doctors discovered 14 additional lesions caused by endometriosis — a condition Bindi has openly battled for years. Surgeons also repaired a hernia linked to the birth of her daughter, Grace, in 2021.

“I am so thankful that I got the help I needed,” Bindi shared in a heartfelt Instagram post from her hospital bed. “Surgery was a success.”

Years of silent suffering

Bindi has spoken before about her long and painful journey with undiagnosed endometriosis — a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, causing intense pain and fatigue.

“For over ten years, I was in so much pain,” Bindi revealed last year. “People thought I was just flaky or lazy… but I was really struggling just to get through the day.”

Her story has helped bring attention to a condition that affects one in ten women of reproductive age but often goes undiagnosed for years due to a lack of awareness, even among doctors.

While Bindi recovered in New York, her younger brother, 21-year-old Robert Irwin, stepped in to host the gala in Las Vegas. He later told People Magazine how proud he was of his sister.

“She came to Las Vegas ready to tough it out, but the doctors said her appendix had to come out immediately,” he explained. “She’s going to be okay — but it was scary.”

Bindi’s message ended on a hopeful note, promising fans she’ll be back for the next gala in Brisbane this November. “Time to heal now,” she wrote. “Sending my love to you all.”

Bindi’s openness about her health struggles shines a light on endometriosis, a condition still misunderstood and often minimized. Her experience reminds many women — and the people around them — that pain should never be ignored or brushed aside.
