In 2025, Bret was diagnosed with two rare conditions: Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and T-Cell Lymphoma. These aggressive illnesses weakened his immune system and dramatically changed the course of his life.

The Broadway community rallied behind Bret as he bravely shared his health journey online. In August 2025, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover medical expenses. The page revealed how Bret had to step away from his graduate studies at the University of Central Florida, just as his family had begun settling into their new home in Orlando.

“What should have been a season of new beginnings has instead turned into an unexpected battle for health and stability,” the fundraiser stated.

Despite his struggles, Bret stayed optimistic. In a Christmas Day post from his hospital bed, he wrote, “Merry Christmas to all of you! We are so grateful for your love and support! Looking forward to a new year and hope to see you all soon. Sending love!”
