Tragedy strikes Cal State Fullerton soccer team after unexpected accident

A promising young athlete’s life took a heartbreaking turn following a crash that stunned the university community.

What began as a regular evening in late September ended in devastation for two Cal State Fullerton soccer players — and a campus now grieving an unthinkable loss. The incident involved electric scooters, a box truck, and two teammates who were simply headed to a soccer match.

Lauren Turner, a sophomore standout on the Titans women’s soccer team, was known for her energy, humor, and leadership. Just 19 years old, she had already made a big mark on the field, starting every game her freshman year and continuing as a key player this season.

“Lauren approached everything she did with heart and joy,” her family said. “She was funny, full of life, and had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease.”

Her teammates described her as “the funniest, most charismatic, and loving teammate you could ever ask for.”

The night everything changed

On the evening of September 27, Turner and her teammate Ashlyn Gwynn were riding electric scooters near campus when a box truck traveling in the same lane hit them. According to police, neither athlete was wearing a helmet. Drugs and alcohol were ruled out as factors.

The crash left both young women critically injured. Turner suffered severe head trauma and never regained consciousness. Gwynn was also hospitalized with major injuries and remains in recovery.

Grief, safety changes, and support

Turner passed away on November 7, nearly six weeks after the accident. Her family shared the news with deep sorrow, writing: “Our hearts are broken, and our family is forever changed… We will miss her beyond measure.”

In response to the tragedy, Titans head coach Demian Brown announced a new safety policy requiring all athletes to wear helmets when riding scooters — a move that echoes similar efforts across college campuses nationwide.

“If anything can come out of it, if we can do something to prevent something like this happening somewhere else, we have to try,” Brown said.

A teammate’s journey to recovery

Gwynn, who spent a month in intensive care, is now undergoing extensive rehabilitation, including physical, speech, and occupational therapy. Doctors anticipate a recovery timeline of one to two years.

Her family called her healing “a miracle,” and supporters continue to follow her progress through social media and fundraising efforts.

The Titan community continues to honor both players. Wristbands reading “LT5 – AG7” became a symbol of love and solidarity throughout the season. Turner’s GoFundMe campaign has surpassed $105,000, while Gwynn’s is approaching $68,000.
