The album, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” not only won him a Grammy for Album of the Year and Best New Artist but also paved the way for his substantial roles in television. He starred in the popular CBS sitcoms “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart,” where he brought his signature deadpan style and understated humor to millions of viewers.
In a candid 1990 discussion with Los Angeles magazine, Newhart revealed, “I tend to find humor in the macabre. I would say 85 percent of me is what you see on the show. And the other 15 percent is a very sick man with a very deranged mind.” His unique approach to comedy left a lasting impact on the genre.
Newhart’s career also included significant appearances in films such as “Elf” and TV shows like “The Big Bang Theory,” introducing him to newer generations of fans. His comedic legacy was further cemented with an induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1992.
Beyond the screen, Newhart shared an interesting tidbit from his days as an accountant. To alleviate the boredom of the job, he would often perform impromptu comedy sketches over the phone with a friend, showcasing his natural comedic flair early in his career.
Bob Newhart, the genteel but sharply satirical comic whose TV series “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart” were huge hits throughout the 1970s and ’80s, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 94.
