Country star Eric Church plans new neighborhood for hurricane survivors
The singer-songwriter purchased land to create a community for families displaced by natural disasters.
Eric Church is turning his commitment to hurricane recovery into action, with plans to build 40 homes for families in North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. His Chief Cares Foundation has purchased land in Avery County, aiming to create a new neighborhood with homes, a community center, and essential infrastructure.
Last fall, Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the southeastern U.S., leaving many without homes. While several states felt the impact, Church—who grew up in North Carolina—chose to focus his relief efforts on his home state.
According to WSOC-TV Channel 9, Church’s foundation recently acquired property outside of Newland, N.C., to develop a residential area. The project includes installing water and sewer lines, building a road, and constructing 40 new homes for displaced families. Plans also feature a community center and a walking trail to help rebuild not just homes, but a sense of community.
Local excitement and gratitude
For many residents, this project is life-changing. Some have been living in temporary housing or motels since the storm destroyed their homes.
“There are so many families who are deserving of this that have lost everything,” one local resident told WSOC-TV. “And there should be more people like [Church.]”
The initiative is a major step in long-term recovery efforts for the region, offering stability to families who have struggled to find permanent housing.
More than just music
Church’s commitment to hurricane recovery goes beyond real estate development. He released a special version of his song Darkest Hour (Helene Edit), with proceeds going toward relief efforts. His hit song Carolina was also featured in a North Carolina tourism campaign to encourage economic revitalization.
Additionally, Church teamed up with fellow country star Luke Combs to organize the Concert for Carolina, a massive benefit event that raised nearly $25 million for hurricane recovery efforts.
A lasting impact
By using his platform and resources to make a real difference, Eric Church is proving that country music is more than just storytelling—it’s about community and action. His rebuilding efforts are not just about homes; they’re about giving families a fresh start.
With construction plans in motion, residents in Avery County are seeing hope on the horizon, thanks to Church’s dedication to his home state.
