Dolly Parton Laid to Rest in Nashville as Sister Freida Breaks Her Silence

Freida Parton waited until her sister was buried before she said anything. In a long Facebook post, Dolly Parton’s younger sister wrote about the woman who raised her from age 13 and used to climb into bed with her when they were both scared of the dark. Dolly died August 25 at 80, after what her representatives called a brief battle with cancer. The family buried her in Nashville on August 28.

The sister who became her mother

Freida opened by thanking people for bearing with her while she grieves. Then she got specific. Dolly climbed into bed with her when they were small because neither of them liked the dark. Dolly took over as her mother figure from ages 13 to 18. To the world she was a superstar, Freida wrote, but “to me, she was my Dolly Momma.”

The post isn’t all heavy. Freida admitted Dolly kept trying to talk her into wearing one of her wigs for her own shows at Dollywood, and that she never once gave in.

She didn’t pretend it was all easy, either. Freida wrote about years of arguments between the two of them, and said she never stopped loving her sister through any of it. The Daily Beast has her full Facebook tribute.

A private service, exactly as she asked

Parton was buried August 28 at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville, next to Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, who died in March 2025. The family had said beforehand that the service was closed to everyone outside the immediate family, at Parton’s own request. They asked fans to honor her some other way.

Porter Wagoner and Tammy Wynette are buried at Woodlawn too.

Bryan Seaver, Parton’s nephew and her longtime head of security, told TMZ she would be buried in her signature high heels and a cotton dress. In the video announcing her death, he passed on a request she had made to him directly. After a career spent under heavy rhinestones, she wanted somewhere soft.

Who confirmed it, and how

The burial wasn’t announced by a publicist. Parton’s niece, Lainey Mae Parton, posted photos with her aunt on Instagram the following day and wrote that she had waited until “after my granny was laid to rest yesterday” before trying to put it into words. In the same post she described Dolly backing her decision to go to beauty school instead of college, then paying for it. E! Online has more on the service and the tributes that followed.

The prayers she asked for months ago

One line in Freida’s post points back to last year. She had asked people to pray for Dolly months earlier. Now she was asking them to pray for the family.

That earlier request caused a mess. Freida’s October 2025 post landed while fans were already uneasy about Parton’s canceled Las Vegas residency and her withdrawal from an Academy appearance. Parton filmed her own response and put it out publicly. She asked whether she looked sick and said flatly that she wasn’t dying. Freida clarified afterward that she hadn’t meant to signal an emergency.

Ten months later, the second prayer request was the real one.

Freida ended by saying she’s working on something in Dolly’s honor for fans. She hasn’t said what it is.

Parton asked for a funeral nobody outside the family could attend, and she got it. That leaves her sister’s Facebook post standing in as the public goodbye.
