Kane Watson, 28, had taken his 18-month-old daughter and three stepsons to Muriwai Beach on Saturday, August 23, when the accident occurred. Reports say he had been playing in the sand with the children when part of a dune suddenly gave way, burying him headfirst.

Witnesses said Watson called for help as he became trapped, but despite his children’s efforts to get assistance, he remained stuck for around 15 minutes before emergency teams were able to dig him out.

He was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital, where he died the following day, Sunday, August 24.

Experts warn about the dangers of sand dunes

Following the tragedy, University of Auckland lecturer Colin Whittaker told RNZ that many people underestimate how dangerous dunes can be.

“If you’ve got a big dune above you and a lot of that collapses, you’ve potentially got something that weighs as much as an elephant collapsing on top of you,” he explained.

He added that rescuing someone buried by sand is extremely difficult: “As soon as you start trying to dig someone out, as you dig a hole, the sand fills it back in. It’s incredibly challenging.”

Family mourns a devoted father

A fundraising page set up to support Watson’s family describes him as a caring partner, son, brother, and father who was expecting another baby early next year.

“His greatest joy was being with his children — not only his own, but also the kids he cared for and loved as if they were his own,” wrote family friend Kristalle Tayler.

Watson’s sister Shaquille described him to local media as her “best friend” and “favorite person,” saying he had always dreamed of having his own family.

For Watson’s family, the loss is especially painful knowing his unborn child will never meet him. Loved ones say they will make sure the baby grows up hearing stories about the father who loved them before they were born.
