Governor Bill Lee Pauses Tennessee Executions

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused all executions scheduled for the remainder of 2026 after Christa Pike survived an attempted lethal injection in which she received two doses of pentobarbital.

Lee announced the decision on September 30, saying the state would conduct a “comprehensive, third-party review” of Pike’s execution attempt.

Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective, Lee said in a statement.

Therefore, the remaining scheduled execution will not be carried out this year.

What  does Governor Bill Lee’s decison mean for Gary Wayne Sutton’s execution

The decision means Gary Wayne Sutton, who had been scheduled to be executed on December 3, will not be put to death this year.

Sutton was sentenced to death for his role in the 1992 murders of Tommy Griffin and his sister, Connie Branam, in Blount County, East Tennessee.

Prosecutors said Sutton carried out the killings with his uncle, James Dellinger, who was also convicted and sentenced to death.

Dellinger died of natural causes on Tennessee’s death row in 2023.

Sutton has previously had an execution date.

In 2022, Lee paused executions in Tennessee, with Sutton and four other death-row inmates among those scheduled to be executed. When new execution dates were assigned earlier this year, Sutton was the only one of the five who did not receive a new date at that time.

Christa Pike survives execution attempt after Governor Bill Lee rejected clemency

Pike was scheduled to be executed on September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

The execution attempt was unsuccessful after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital.

Pike survived and was subsequently transported to an off-site medical facility for treatment.

Her attorneys said she remained alive and breathing after the doses were administered and that she had a heartbeat.

The failed execution prompted questions about Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol and the medical procedures used during executions.

Tennessee Department of Correction defends protocol

The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed the state’s established execution procedures during Pike’s execution attempt.

The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office, department spokesperson Dorinda Carter said in an email on September 30.

The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening.

Carter confirmed that Pike had been transported to an off-site medical facility.

The department issued the statement more than two hours after reports emerged that Pike had survived the two doses of pentobarbital.
