What’s happening with Jesse Jackson? Family reveals surprising health update

Rev. Jesse Jackson, the legendary civil rights leader, has been quietly battling a rare brain disorder—now he’s in the hospital, and his family is speaking out.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, 84, is under hospital care as doctors observe a little-known but serious condition that many mistake for Parkinson’s disease. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the group Jackson founded, confirmed his hospitalization and shared new details about his health that may surprise even longtime supporters.

Known worldwide for marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and shaking up presidential politics in the 1980s, Jackson has long been seen as a fighter. But behind the scenes, he’s been dealing with a different kind of battle—this time with his own body.

While Jackson revealed back in 2017 that he had Parkinson’s disease, his family now says that doctors recently gave him a different diagnosis: progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rarer, often misdiagnosed brain disorder that mimics Parkinson’s symptoms.

“He has been managing this neurodegenerative condition for more than a decade,” the Rainbow PUSH statement explained. “The family appreciates all prayers at this time.”

What is PSP—and why is it so often confused with Parkinson’s?

According to experts at Johns Hopkins, PSP is often mistaken for Parkinson’s because they share many symptoms: shaking hands, slow movement, stiffness, and memory changes. But PSP tends to get worse faster and can affect a person’s ability to move their eyes and keep their balance—leading to more dangerous falls.

For years, Jackson worked through the symptoms. In a deeply personal letter from 2017, he wrote that he first noticed the signs several years earlier and tried to push through.

“But as my daily physical struggles intensified, I could no longer ignore the symptoms,” Jackson said. “Recognition of the effects of this disease on me has been painful… For me, a Parkinson’s diagnosis is not a stop sign.”

Voice that still inspires

Though he’s been more private in recent years, Jackson has remained a symbolic presence at key events and marches. Even as his health declined, he stayed connected to his mission of justice, peace, and equality.

Now, as he undergoes observation in the hospital, a wave of support has flooded social media. Fans, fellow activists, and politicians alike are sending prayers—and remembering the huge impact Jackson has made.

“Jesse Jackson is a giant,” one supporter posted. “He’s always stood up for us. Now it’s time to lift him up in prayer.”

As Jackson once said, a diagnosis isn’t a stop sign. It’s just another chapter in a life defined by strength, spirit, and service.
