Jimmy Kimmel tears up while addressing Erika Kirk after return to late-night show
The talk show host clarified his comments on Charlie Kirk’s death, defended free speech, and shared a heartfelt message for Erika Kirk
Jimmy Kimmel returned to his late-night show after being suspended over remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death, using his monologue to respond to criticism, push back against Donald Trump, and deliver an emotional tribute to Erika Kirk.
Jimmy Kimmel’s show was temporarily pulled last week after backlash over his comments following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel criticized the political response to the tragedy, mocking former president Donald Trump and questioning tributes made in Kirk’s honor. His remarks drew anger from Trump and others, sparking debates about free speech and the limits of comedy in times of grief.

Nexstar Media Group, in partnership with ABC, announced that Kimmel’s program would be suspended “for the foreseeable future.” The move drew criticism from celebrities and politicians, including former president Barack Obama, who argued that silencing comedians sets a troubling precedent.
Kimmel addresses Donald Trump in his return
When Kimmel returned to the air Tuesday night, he didn’t shy away from the controversy. He accused Trump of trying to cancel him and argued that the attempt backfired.
“You almost have to feel sorry for him,” Kimmel said during his monologue. “He tried his best to cancel me and instead he forced millions of people to watch the show.”

The comedian also warned against government attempts to silence entertainers, calling such threats “anti-American” and invoking names like Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and Howard Stern as examples of comedians who challenged authority.
Breaking down while speaking about Erika Kirk
While Kimmel kept parts of his monologue lighthearted, his tone shifted when addressing criticism that he had been insensitive toward Charlie Kirk’s death. He grew emotional as he clarified his intentions.
“It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” Kimmel said, adding that he had shared a message of compassion for Kirk’s family on social media shortly after the tragedy.
Kimmel then turned his focus to Erika Kirk, praising her for her decision to forgive her husband’s killer.
“She forgave him. That is an example we should follow,” Kimmel said. “If you believe in the teachings of Jesus, as I do, there it was. A selfless act of grace. Forgiveness from a grieving widow. It touched me deeply. If there’s anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that.”
Jimmy Kimmel’s return just shows the tension between comedy, politics, and grief. While he used humor to criticize Trump and defend his right to speak freely, his emotional words about Erika Kirk revealed a more vulnerable side—one focused on compassion and forgiveness in the midst of loss.
