Johnny Mathis announces retirement at 89— struggles with memory loss

After enchanting audiences for over 65 years, Johnny Mathis is stepping away from the spotlight due to age and memory concerns.

Legendary singer Johnny Mathis has announced his retirement from live performances as he nears his 90th birthday, ending a remarkable music career that has spanned more than six decades.

For generations, Johnny Mathis has been the soothing soundtrack to love stories, special moments, and family memories. Now, the beloved crooner known for timeless hits like Chances Are and Misty is preparing to say goodbye to the stage for good.

In a heartfelt message shared by his team, the 89-year-old singer revealed he will retire from touring due to “age and memory issues which have accelerated.” His last scheduled performance will take place on May 18, 2025, at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey. All shows planned beyond June 2025 have officially been canceled.

“It’s with sincere regret that… we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts,” the statement read. “As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year.”

From humble beginnings to global fame

Born in Gilmer, Texas, and raised in San Francisco, Mathis began singing at age 13. Encouraged by his father, who was a vaudeville performer, young Johnny was introduced to classical and jazz music early on.

His breakthrough came in 1957 when he released Chances Are and It’s Not for Me to Say. That same year, Johnny’s Greatest Hits became one of the most successful albums of all time, spending 490 weeks on the Billboard charts—nearly 10 years.

With more than 350 million records sold worldwide and over 70 albums to his name, Mathis became one of the best-selling artists in history. His soft, romantic voice earned him the nickname The Voice of Romance, and his songs became staples at weddings, anniversaries, and holiday celebrations.

Johnny Mathis didn’t just top charts—he also earned a place in music history. In 2003, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards, recognizing the depth and longevity of his career. He also holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has been inducted into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.

His influence stretches across generations, inspiring artists in both pop and jazz. Even in recent years, Mathis continued to perform live, captivating fans with his velvet voice and graceful stage presence.
